Swimming with sharks in the Galapagos Islands: Cat, a Conversation Corps volunteer to the Galapagos Islands, found herself close to this shark while diving at 'Kicker Rock'.Cat, a Conversation Corps volunteer to the Galapagos Islands, sent this about her recent experience -

I had great experience in the Galapagos - my host family were really special and made an effort to make sure I had a positive local experience taking me on weekends to their farm, out on their family boat and even to visit their giant pet tortoise, Pepe, who now lives in the church grounds.

To pay or not to pay - that is the question.

Whether to pay-to-volunteer or volunteer-at-no-cost-to-yourself (or as the current debate puts it ‘paid or free volunteering’) – is a difficult and challenging debate and realistically there is no right or wrong answer – it is most definitely not ‘black and white.’

Some people want to travel abroad, to volunteer so they feel good about themselves – what is so wrong with that? Some people want to travel abroad to volunteer to give something back to society – again, what is so wrong with that?

Niamh meets Cacao: Volunteer Niamh from Ireland being shown a Cacao fruit (its seeds are used to make cocoa and chocolate) while visiting the 24 de Mayo community in a tropical forest.I spent three months in Quito, Ecuador at the start of this year, as a volunteer of EIL. I found the first while to be very tough, being on my own without my friends and family around, in an unfamiliar place and submerged in an unfamiliar language. I had absolutely no Spanish before arriving in Ecuador but by the end, I was quite confident with the spoken language.
