Hagia SophiaLucy, a recent volunteer to Turkey writes;

"We had the most amazing time....... Our host familes were so welcoming and generous. They were so kind and made it seem like we weren't a hassle! They had the most amazing house with a midblowing view of the Bosphorus river.

We went to our project which was extremely hectic as there were dozens of women waiting for their aid boxes. We were set to organise their store room - which was a task as it was so messy!

Unfortunatly we were not able to teach English as it was Ramadan and it was too difficult for the families to walk to the project in the heat.

To pay or not to pay - that is the question.

Whether to pay-to-volunteer or volunteer-at-no-cost-to-yourself (or as the current debate puts it ‘paid or free volunteering’) – is a difficult and challenging debate and realistically there is no right or wrong answer – it is most definitely not ‘black and white.’

Some people want to travel abroad, to volunteer so they feel good about themselves – what is so wrong with that? Some people want to travel abroad to volunteer to give something back to society – again, what is so wrong with that?

Time is running out for Vodafone applications!

Deirdre, a volunteer to Turkey, writes:

I spent the month of July volunteering in a care home for the elderly in Etiler, Istanbul. The staff were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. They were so open and willing to share their culture and their way of life with me. They immediately welcomed me into their working environment, helped and supported me throughout my time there and even though communication was difficult we got to know each other so well.

My homestay was with a family in Gehmehöy on the Asian side of the city. They were so welcoming and did everything they possible could to help me settle in and feel like I was part of their family.

Ms. Elif Kaba hosted Ms. Mary Reilly for one month while Mary worked for two volunteer projects. Her host sister Elif writes:

We loved Mary very much and we accept her as a family member. My home in Istanbul but we travelled together and visited my parent's house during our festival (Bayram) time. My nieces are still waiting her in every year.
