Changing Minds
Changing Minds is an exciting programme for EIL. It allows us to use our intercultural experience to work with UK young people in the UK; breaking down barriers and developing communities. Young people from area but different backgrounds and cultures come together to learn about themselves and each other, try new activities and discuss youth issues with policy makers.
Previous projects:
2009 - Gloucester
The 6 week project brought together 40 young people aged 14 - 18 from 3 partners in Gloucester (Increase the Peace, Young Gloucestershire & the Friendship Cafe). The young people came from a diverse range of backgrounds including Black Caribbean, White British, Bangladeshi, Mixed Race, Indian, Black African and British Pakistani. During the weeks, they took part in:
3 day residential - group discussions - outdoor activities such as archery, high ropes course, campfire - music workshops - meetings with the police, Mayor of Gloucester, an MP, an MEP - final showcase event for the local community
Feedback showed that the young people gained confidence, learnt about other cultures, gained new skills, made new friends and had FUN! "Diversity makes the world a more interesting place!", "I've learnt I'm adaptable. [I want to] continue to be more confident."
The policy makers also gained from being involved and appreciated the opportunity to meet a diverse range of young people. "I found my visit most rewarding. Many sensible comment were put to me and in return they listened to what I had to say" Mayor of Gloucester
