Our Leonardo participants Shane, Shireen and James, returned recently from their placements in Barcelona, Spain and had a great time! Here are some of their photos:

Day 5, 24.11.11

I went to work in the morning and the evening today. 10am-1pm and 4-8pm. It's quite a strange working pattern for me compared to back in England where I'm used to working an 8 hour day all the way through. Pablo put me to work making plasticine models for the children and the time went quickly.

Carol and Pablo [work colleagues] invited me to lunch back at Pablo's flat. I accepted and met Giulia an Italian girl from Verona who is also doing a placement as well ... Lunch was nice, We had a mushroom pasta. I must say I felt abit out of the loop in some of the conversation - Italian, Spanish and Catalan was being thrown about! I did try to get involved, but thankful they all spoke English to varying degrees. Pablo later showed me his favourite record an original Beatles LP. Sergeant Peppers Lonely Heart Club. He loved the fact it came with small paper cut outs!

Yesterday, after I had scraped ice off my car to get to work, I received an email from Julie who went to a family in Spain on the Conversation Corps programme. (Conversation Corps volunteers live with a family to help them improve their conversational English.) This is what Julie had to say…..

‘I thought I'd let you know that I've been getting on fine. My family has been very welcoming, and I settled in quickly. In fact, things have been going so well that I plan to stay on beyond the two months originally agreed. It's still 20C here during the day and I'm not ready to return to icy England!

I've been travelling a little at the weekends, to Burgos in northern Spain and Lisbon, and I took four weeks of intensive Spanish lessons at the start of my trip, which helped enormously. I'm still not fluent, which is part of the reason for me wanting to stay, but I'm getting better.

Thanks again for all your help during the application process. This has been a great experience and I'm very glad I came.’

Sounds a good way to spend some time in a sunnier climate to me. Fancy giving it a go?

"The opportunity provided to me by EIL was fantastic in so many ways, I was given the chance to go abroad and not just be a tourist, but to be an active participant in daily life. I had the time to further develop my language skills and to meet a great bunch of people, my cultural knowledge has expanded and I've developed as a person. The independence that EIL afforded to me meant that I was able to hitchhike out to my placement, which was an amazing adventure - before the work had even started! The work I did varied from week to week, but during my placement I had the chance to perform administrative roles as well as going 'out into the field' and teach English and participate in workshops (such as photography and art). After working 9-5 each day, I usually took weekend trips to explore the country with my flatmates, and the hosting organisation were always full of wonderful ideas for places to visit. I know that I've made a difference with the contribution that I made, and I'm sure you can do the same too, if you like to see new places, people and fancy a challenge - get in touch with EIL today!"
