Mentoring by the Red Sea

The Red Sea: View over the Red Sea.Spend 4 weeks in Aqaba, Jordan. This is the site of some of the best diving spots in the world. Your apartment is a short walk to some of the most pristine beaches along the Red Sea.

Bring your skills (photography, soccer, drawing, music, computer/technology) with you to share with Jordanian high school students.

In addition, you will speak conversational English to the students about 20 hours each week.

Afternoons and weekends are free to dive, swim, spend time on the beach or venture into the desert.

Overview

This is a new grassroots initiative to renovate public schools in Jordan.  Led by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, this program will enrich learning environments and enhance opportunities for school children in Jordan and the Arab world.

The programme in Aqaba is in 4 different public schools.  The schools are 2 boys schools and 2 girls schools.  Teachers at each school will be supervisors on this programme.

The initiative will aim to ensure that the schools in this programme:

  • have safe and healthy environments
  • support for teachers
  • inspire creativity and innovation
  • develop a sense of community
  • promote innovation and interactive learning
  • supported by technology and communication
  • prepare students for their future

Benefits

  • Travel for less.
  • You put in a few hours playing games with the students and speaking English each day, and the rest of your time is spent traveling and experiencing the culture in depth.
  • Bring your special interests and talents with you.  Music, photography, soccer, gymnastics, martial arts, drawing, painting, computer technology.  You will share these interests with the high school students, along with speaking conversational English between 3-4 hours each day.
  • Enhance your CV by volunteering as a Conversation Partner.  Job: "Private Language Tutor and Coach." References:  Global. It just doesn't get any better than that.
  • Exclusive materials written by our staff will give you "a bag of tricks", as well as materials given at orientation in Jordan.

Requirements and Duties

  • Mentors for this programme must be English speakers.  They need to have earned a high school (secondary school) diploma or certificate, and be in good health.
  • Share your language, hobbies and interests with the students 15 to 20 hours a week Monday to Friday.
  • Be on time for each session.
  • Manage your own personal expenses (telephone bills, clothing, entertainment and spending money)

Yesterday, after I had scraped ice off my car to get to work, I received an email from Julie who went to a family in Spain on the Conversation Corps programme. (Conversation Corps volunteers live with a family to help them improve their conversational English.) This is what Julie had to say…..

‘I thought I'd let you know that I've been getting on fine. My family has been very welcoming, and I settled in quickly. In fact, things have been going so well that I plan to stay on beyond the two months originally agreed.
