MexicoLive with a family in Mexico and tutor a group at a local school.

Volunteer 20 hours each week in exchange for free room and board in Mexico! Weekends are normally free to experience the culture by travelling around Mexico.

This is a high-energy and really fun position. We provide the materials; you provide the personality to liven up an informal conversation class! Find out first-hand how Mexicans live and work day-to-day. Sometimes there are opportunities to take part in activities. Plus the locals can show you some of the hidden gems of Mexico.

Overview

The Need

People with English as their first language to volunteer 20 hours a week tutoring at a local language school. Many Mexicans want to learn English or improve their speaking English through conversation.

Duties and Responsibilities include

  • Sharing your language with the language school for at least 20 hours a week Monday to Friday.
  • Using our Bag of Tricks, provide creative, fun and informative conversation sessions.
  • Do not be late to tutor your group.
  • Manage your own personal expenses (telephone bills, clothing, entertainment and spending money).

Programme details

Project details

  • Length: 1 to 3 months in increments of 1 month.
  • Locations: All over Mexico.
  • Orientation: Provided in country by local staff in Mexico city, includes 2 nights hostel in Colonia Roma, 20 minutes from downtown Mexico City and a 1/2 day tour. Optional in country language classes available.
  • Accommodation: Private room with a host family and 3 healthy meals a day. Meals during orientation are not included.
  • Working hours: 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Availability: Flexible. Arrival Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Requirements

  • Fluent English i.e. you should have English as your first language.
  • 18 years old and over.
  • Good health.
  • A good basic education e.g. Secondary School and above.

If available near your placement, assistance is provided in identifying suitable language lessons. The cost of language classes is not included in your programme fee.

Please note, due to fluctuations in the exchange rate, prices are given in US$.

What is included in the cost of the programme

  • Personalised Volunteer Placement with a host family through our Partner in Mexico, including all the coordination, in-person visits and communication necessary with the local organisation.
  • Your orientation in Mexico City before heading to your family.
  • A comfortable, safe place to live in Mexico, your own private room, and all of your meals.
  • An experienced Programme Manager (and former volunteer) who will serve as your coordinator and liaison with our in-country staff in Mexico.
  • In-country basic language assistance.
  • Airport pickup and transport to Mexico City for orientation.
  • 1/2 day walking tour of Mexico City.
  • Transport to your host family accompanied by a member of the local staff.
  • Professional, locally-based staff to provide orientation, supervision and guidance throughout your stay.
  • Extensive medical, accident and dental insurance along with emergency evacuation insurance.
  • Important documents, including in-depth pre-departure packs, orientation information, and all in-country informational materials.
  • 24-hour emergency hotline.
  • Our own text book, A Tutor's Guide--Teaching English To Families and Children.

What is not included in the cost of the programme

  • Flights.
  • Personal spending money.
  • Visa costs.
