Thailand

Thailand, which means ‘land of the free’, shares borders with Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Thailand has beautiful, golden beaches in the south and mountains and jungle in the north. It is a very beautiful and diverse country with many different ethnic groups with their own distinctive traditions, costumes, languages and cultures.

Amongst the peoples of Thailand there are many individuals, families and whole communities who live in extreme poverty and are very vulnerable to exploitation.

    Overview

hands word logo assists with community development and relief aid.

School children in ThailandEducational support activities include the renovation of rural schools and the provision of equipment. Through our sponsorship programme children and young people benefit from an education that would otherwise have been denied to them.

Culvert building in Thailand Projects for villages typically include the provision of clean water supplies, latrines and food production. We also encourage and support the development of skills and new initiatives that will generate income for poor families and communities.

In certain areas along the border between Burma and Thailand we are seeking to respond to the suffering of men, women and children displaced by the brutal policies and practices of the Burmese military dictatorship. This includes the provision of basic necessities for people in desperate and urgent need; food, clothing, mosquito nets, blankets and medical help.

Thai Twister!Russell and Lucy are volunteering in Thailand and they have sent another newsletter about the work they are doing:-

    Sawatdee krup/ka

August brought around our first team, which we organised and ran ourselves. The team was only small and consisted of the two of us and two younger girls. The main focus of the team was to show the girls what HANDS do and also run a dance program. We also created a drama with the children at our boy’s hostel.

We started our trip at the boy’s hostel. We spent Saturday and Sunday playing games and putting the performance together.
