Malta, Island Clinics

MaltaLearn about the Maltese health care system while assisting in various areas, based on your knowledge and experience. Be a part of the facilitation and running of daily programmes for patients. You will travel around the island at various clinics.

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily, Malta basically consists of three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino. Their total population is about 366,000.

The distance between Malta and the nearest point in Sicily is 58 miles. The distance from the nearest point on the North African mainland (Tunisia) is 180 miles. Gibralter is 1,134 miles to the west and Alexandria is 938 miles to the east.

Malta's history as the "hospital of the Mediterranean" dates back to the Knights and the "Sacra Infermeria."  This tradition of quality health care continues through to the modern day with the level of service provided being equivalent to other European countries.

Health service in Malta includes specialised treatment like immunisation, dental services, speech therapy, and Paediatric clinics.  Besides these specialised services, paramedic services like nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, and optometry are also offered by the health care units in Malta.  Overall health development on Malta includes preventive medicinal checks in the form of immunisation, baby clinics, glaucoma screening and weight check clinics.

The government of Malta offers free healthcare to all of its citizens.  The biggest government expenditures are health and education.  Almost 4 years ago, the government inagurated Mater Dei Hospital in Malta.  This is a state of the art hospital that cost Malta €250 million.  You can read more about Mater Dei Hospital here.
