India
The world's largest democracy, India is also one of the world's oldest civilizations.
"So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked." - Mark Twain, from Following the Equator.
Its unique cultural heritage is everywhere in evidence. It is a predominately Hindu country, with social and religious structures that have survived centuries of outside influence.
India is also massively overpopulated (with about 1.05 billion people), and suffers from serious problems related to poverty and environmental degradation. Voluntary organisations play an important role in addressing these problems, and volunteers are always in demand. Placements are available in projects in various locations around India, including Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), Ahmedabad, Pune and Patna.
Projects
Education/Teaching
There are 18 official languages in India. English is the most important language for business and politics, however it is not widely spoken among the poorer sections of society. Female education in particular remains a problem, with over half the female population unable to read and write. There are many opportunities for volunteers in schools around India to teach basic English in collaboration with the local English teacher to primary school children, secondary students and adult learners.

Social Welfare Services
India is a highly populated country with enormous economic difficulties.
