When Marie and her husband Eric first welcomed Joevyn into their home, they expected to host an international student for a Festive Stay. Joevyn, a Malaysian student beginning her studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, arrived on Christmas Eve with a warm smile and the understandable nerves of someone far from home.

What began as a simple Festive visit soon became something much more meaningful.

During her time studying in the UK, Joevyn returned to stay with Marie and Eric many times. Sometimes it was for a few nights, sometimes for a longer visit when she wanted somewhere familiar and welcoming.

Eric, in particular, formed a close bond with her. They spent hours talking about her studies, life in the UK and the differences between their cultures. Marie remembers how naturally the friendship grew and how much joy it brought to them all. Gradually, Joevyn became part of the family.

When the student graduated and returned home, the relationship didn’t end. Regular letters, emails, and then video calls kept them connected as the couple followed Joevyn’s life from afar. As she built a life for herself in New Zealand, Joevyn invited Eric and Marie to her wedding in 2019.

One of the happiest moments came when she shared the news of the arrival of a baby girl in October 2024. Photos and video calls meant Marie and Eric could share in the excitement and meet the newest member of the family they had never expected to gain.

By then Eric’s health had begun to decline, and he sadly passed away not long afterwards. But the memories of the friendship he had formed with Joevyn brought him enormous happiness.

Marie still keeps the photo Joevyn sent on Christmas morning. She printed it out including the message for Eric and stood these on his bedside cabinet during the final days of his life…. a reminder of the special bond that began with a simple HOST UK Festive Stay.
