A Museum Curator Discovers the Heart of Malvern
When visitors come to the UK, they often arrive with a list of places they want to see — but it is the people they meet and the experiences they share that often become their most treasured memories.
Recently, Malvern welcomed a special visitor from Japan through the Individual Homestay Programme (IHP): a museum curator who wanted to improve her spoken English while experiencing everyday life in an English community.
At the beginning of her stay, speaking and understanding English was a little challenging. However, through daily conversations with her host and the opportunity to use English naturally in real-life situations, her confidence quickly grew. Each conversation helped her become more comfortable with different accents, expressions, and the rhythm of spoken English.
Her host ensured that her visit was filled with memorable experiences that went beyond the usual tourist attractions. She enjoyed the unique experience of outdoor swimming, joined a local WI meeting where she took part in a fish supper evening, and explored the beautiful sights of the Cotswolds. She even had time to catch up with Paddington Bear!
These moments gave her the chance to experience British culture first-hand — meeting local people, sharing stories, and seeing how communities come together.
When it was time to return to Japan, she left with more than photographs and souvenirs. She took home wonderful memories, a new friendship, and improved confidence in spoken English — skills that will support her in her role as a museum curator back in Japan.
This is the true value of the Individual Homestay Programme. Staying with a host family offers something that a hotel simply cannot provide: genuine connections, cultural exchange, and the chance to experience everyday life in another country.
Through IHP, visitors do not just see a place — they become part of it, even if only for a short time. And in doing so, friendships are created that can last far beyond the end of their stay.
