Celebrating Milestones Away From Home

For many of our international students, studying abroad means being away from home during some of life’s biggest milestones. Birthdays, celebrations and special occasions can sometimes feel difficult when family are thousands of miles away — which is why our host families play such an important role.

Recently, one of our students celebrated his 18th birthday whilst staying with his host family, and it was a wonderful reminder of how much care and kindness our hosts bring to the experience. From decorating the house and baking a birthday cake to creating a warm family celebration, they made sure his special day was one to remember.

Moments like these show that hosting is about far more than simply providing accommodation. Our host families often become a true support system for students, offering encouragement, reassurance and a sense of belonging during important life moments. Acting in loco parentis — ‘in the place of a parent’ — they help students feel safe, valued and included while they are away from home.

A huge thank you to all of our incredible host families who go above and beyond to make these milestones so meaningful. Your kindness leaves lasting memories that students carry with them long after their stay has ended.
